Apple Siri Sucks :( Over Hyped iPhone 4S Continues To Disappoint Users

Call it a case of expectation mismatch or a perfect case of – “why not to hype your product beyond anyone’s imagination” so that, just in case, it slightly underperforms, there wouldn’t be huge hue and cry about it. All right, underperform is an understatement as there was a complete outage of, however, the main point that I am drawing your attention towards is – The dark side of over hype.

Apple has a crisis at hand. Tim cooks isn’t Steve Jobs who would have converted every crisis into opportunity and has begun to feel the heat.

Scores of people are disappointed as Apple’s Siri isn’t performing on promised levels (i.e. extreme personal customization hailed as personal assistant) and in addition of it, its recent outage of services has led to increasing murmurs questioning Apple’s continuous commitment to its high quality levels.

A New Yorker has even sued apple for false advertisement which lured him into buying his iphone4s. Reports confirm that in a complaint filed with the U.S. District Court in San Jose, the petitioner has alleged that Siri in real life is nothing like the Siri depicted in Apple’s TV spots. Those ads show Siri making appointments, finding restaurants and providing instructions on how to tie a tie.
He claimed that those ads are “fundamentally and designedly false and misleading” since Siri “does not perform as advertised.

The tech world is evenly divided. Some say that the outage of services signifies success while many call it as a shortcoming and Apple needs to learn a lesson in how to manage large-scale, persistent data service managed from its own server facility.  Admires argue that Service outage isn’t anything new. Blackberry has been encountering the same offlate despite of having a decade old experience in managing server services.

Apple can claim it is still in beta and may have underestimated usage levels but that is no excuse for over hyping its products to unimaginable levels and then coming out with substandard services which is no better than Google voice.
Many iPhone 4S users are not very happy about Siri as it usually fails 50% of the times and can not be used regularly. Many say, Forget about personalization, many a times it even can not even basic functions like opening the net, or an application or give correct directions.

Before I wid up, here is the parting shot from no one other than apple’s co founder – Steve Wozniak

Then there’s Siri, Apple’s new voice-recognition software. Woz says he’s been using Siri for a long time and used to love it when it was an independent application created for the iPhone.

But ever since Apple bought Siri and built the software into the iPhone 4S, it doesn’t work as well as it used to.

“I used to ask Siri, ‘What are the five biggest lakes in California?’ and it would come back with the answer. Now it just misses. It gives me real estate listings. I used to ask, ‘What are the prime numbers greater than 87?’ and it would answer. Now instead of getting prime numbers, I get listings for prime rib, or prime real estate,” Woz says. Worse, a lot of the time Siri says it can’t make a connection to the back-end servers that power the system. “With the iPhone 4 I could press a button and call my wife. Now on the 4S I can only do that when Siri can connect over the Internet. But many times it can’t connect. I’ve never had Android come back and say, ‘I can’t connect over the Internet.’”

Apple urgently needs to do some serious soul searching into what exactly is going wrong as the growing murmur of discontent will eventually give rise to unprecedented customer backlash which apple may have never anticipated .
